Placing Filter Paper in the Funnel

Video. Moistening the paper.

If the filtration will be done using paper as the filtering medium, filter paper must be placed in a Buchner funnel. The filter paper must cover the entire bottom surface of the Buchner funnel without needing to be folded. It may be necessary to use scissors to trim filter paper that is too large.

Place the filter paper in the funnel and moisten the paper with a small amount (1-3 mL) of the solvent used. Draw a gentle vacuum (a full vacuum may tear the paper and you will have to begin again), but do not allow the paper to become dry. Look at the paper to ensure that the paper is still flat on the surface of the funnel, and there are no air bubbles below the paper.

Once the paper is wetted and there do not appear to be any channels for the solid to pass through to the receiving flask, the filter is prepared for the filtration.

check What should the student in the video have done before she filtered the solution? Answer

The student should first wet the filter paper and tap it with a glass rod or rubber policeman to remove air bubbles and create a seal between the paper and the funnel. If the paper is not wetted, some of the solid in her sample is likely to go through the funnel.
